Hello Sweet Friends!
I was so excited to make my first quilt block for Donna's quilt sampler quilt along over at her beautiful blog, Donna's Lavender Nest! It felt good to do some patchwork and sewing again! I decided for all the blocks that I am going to use the pretty prints from Sidewalks that I recently received from Donna's fabric shoppe, which you can find here! There is still time to join in this quilty sweetness!
And, since I was already sewing away I thought I would work on some 16-patch quilt blocks. I have about 3 more rows to go for this quilt and then it will be time to put these pretty blocks together!
In the November 1950 issue of The Workbasket magazine, there was this quilt pattern, Star of Bethlehem, that I thought was so beautiful and would love to try one day! It looks a little hard and I am thinking probably hand piecing would be the best with these shapes. I just love how it says to cut the pattern pieces out on cardboard. Such a great idea.
Green, pink, light yellow and white were the most popular colors this quilt was made with, which I think are lovely colors together. I am even think this would be a pretty pillow cover, too! Have you seen this quilt before?
Thank you all so much for your sweet comments on the Little Women book and other sweet treasures! Hope that you are enjoying some lovely weather and crafty goodness!
Wishing you a wonderful day and weekend!
Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI have seen that pattern before. My sweet grandma was a life long quilter, and quilted into her 90's.
She made quilts like that.
I loved all the quilt patterns that she made, and cherish every quilt that she made for me.
She always tried to use fabric that was left-over from making dresses, or aprons, or cut up old shirts etc.... so every quilt had special meaning.
If anyone can do that pattern, you can!!!

ReplyDeleteYour blocks look great, Heather! The Star of Bethlehem block is a beauty. I've made it before, years ago) in a sampler quilt. It was called a Carpenter's Wheel for that quilt. It looks very similar to the popular Swoon block but the center star is a Sawtooth in that block where as this is a Lemoyne Star. I can't wait to see the fabrics you use for yours :)
ReplyDeleteHeather your block turned out great. I love seeing the pictures from you work baskets.

Your new quilt block is beautiful. I also love your 16 block squares and I really need to find some time to get mine together. I am really looking forward to seeing what you do with yours as I feel at a bit of a standstill with mine. That Bethlehem star quilt looks amazing and yes wouldn't it be fun to give it a go. Enjoy your weekend lovely Heather xoxo

ReplyDeleteYour quilt block is so pretty! I do love the fabric. i am hoping I can join in on some quilt block with Donna, but still working on getting a sewing machine. I am very green and know basically nothing about quilting, but am very willing to learn. The star of Bethlehem looks so nice, I have not seen it before. Your 16 patch is really cute too. Are they the 10 1/2 in blocks?
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Susie
Pretty blocks! You can buy acrylic templates for the Star of Bethlehem - in 18" or a soon to be released 12". Makes for a really accurate block.
