My granny square quilt is finally finished! Yay! This quilt top had been sitting for awhile to get quilted, so yesterday I worked hard to get it done. I have another quilt that I planned and started last year, that I really want to work on, so I thought I better get this one finished first.
I already washed and dried it to give it that crinkly goodness that I love.
I adore all the pretty colors, and prints together. I did a simple straight stitch around the squares.
I used a vintage yellow wreath rose sheet for the backing. I had a some trouble with the sheet puckering, even though I taped it taught to the floor and pinned like crazy when I basted it.
This is only my 4th quilt that I have done, so I know that I am in need of practice. Would love to hear if you have used a vintage sheet for a quilt and if you had any problems or have a secret tip when quilting with one!
For the binding I chose a pretty aqua calico, which came out so sweetly.
So, a lovely quilt for those cold fall and winter days, which I know or at least hope are coming! ;)
This beautiful vintage piece was one of my first treasures. I am still not really sure what it was used for, or the proper name for it.
The detail is beautiful, with all of it's curved lines, and twisty poles on the bottom.
The top is a velvety tan with a sweet ribbon around the edge.
This is one piece that I love, and would never do anything to change it. I store quilts in the bottom part, and have a bucket of yarn goodness that sits on top. Do you know what it is or what it was originally used for?
Wishing you a lovely and crafty day!!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE your granny quilt!!! The vintage sheet is perfect for the backing, and the quilting is just perfect! It makes me want to finish mine!! xoxo Debbie
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is gorgeous, Heather! Sure looks to me like you've been quilting for years and years. That table sure is interesting. I'm guessing something would have been stored below, but what? Best wishes to you, Tammy
ReplyDeleteHeather your quilt is truly beautiful. I LOVE the vintage feel of it. Wishing you a happy day.

Your quilt came out beautiful and I love that sheet you used for the backing.
ReplyDeleteI really don't know the purpose of the little bench but the say the rungs in the bottom are arranged it makes me think it was intended to hold books. I'll be interested to find out what others think.
I wonder if I'll ever be able to do this!! Just beautiful Heather! Ada :)
ReplyDeleteYour finished quilt is so sweet. It was fun following along with the progress and then seeing the final product.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry to be of 'no' help when it comes to the problem of the vintage sheet backing but I'm sure that there will be plenty of help to come from your other readers.
I'm not much help with your bench either, perhaps it held books on the bottom.
Wishing you a lovely day too! xo
I love your quilt!!! You did a great job of quilting it yourself!! I have only used vintage sheets as backing for pillows....the sheet looks great on the back of the quilt! Not sure what the bench is..almost looks like a newspaper or magazine rack...with a seat on top?
ReplyDeleteHugs chris
so lovely, heather! love all the colors together. :)
ReplyDeleteNot quite sure what the piece of furniture is, but your quilt is just lovely! Found your blog through Renee - I really enjoy it!

ReplyDeleteYour quilt is fabulous heather! I love the idea of a vintage sheet on the back of a granny square quilt. I've never tried using a sheet.
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is absolutely precious! And I adore the backing with your darling calico binding. :0) You did a great job quilting. I am a chicken with machine quilting. I end up handquilting everything. :0)
ReplyDeleteLOVE the quilt, beautiful work. I do agree that bench is a book bench for books to be stored under and the cush for the toosh while sitting there reading them. It is a nice piece!!! Mica
ReplyDeleteoh my goodness!! that quilt is GORGEOUS!
ReplyDeletePretty quilt, Heather!
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking a "palor bench"... it's very cool! I would keep it just like it is too!

As you snuggle under this quilt all winter it will remind you of the days of summer with all of those lovely summery florals and pretty colours. I love the vintage sheet you've used as well. Your stool looks like an organists stool..they are high like that...and benchy.
ReplyDeleteThe quilt is so vintagey cute Heather! It looks like it came from your Great Grandma or something. I love the aqua calico that you chose for the edge.
ReplyDeleteGreat job!
Love your quilt, it's completely gorgeous! The sheet backing looks beautiful too although I'm afraid I have no tips for using them as backing, I've only made two quilts myself. I wish I did know though because I have a couple stored away with that aim in mind.

Wow Heather, your quilt turned out sooooo beautiful!! I love it so much, you give me inspiration :) I know Liz Taylor ( http://clairesmama.blogspot.com/ ) does a lot of quilting with vintage sheets, you could maybe ask her a couple questions :) Your treasured bench/table is wonderful too! I love leaving things alone and letting them show off all of their old goodness :) xo Holly
ReplyDeleteHeather, you did a fantastic job on the quilt! It's beautiful and looks so vintage. I've never used sheets in a quilt so no help here. Love the little bench too.
ReplyDeleteI love the backing - of course the quilt looks ever so lovely too, but yellow roses....oh my!
ReplyDeleteNina x
Wonderful! Your quilt would look so great hanging on a wall!
ReplyDeleteThe bars on the bottom of your stool remind me of a quilt stand but of course they are too low to the ground for that. Hmmm... I guess it's a mystery! ♥
Your quilt is beautiful, Heather! I love all of the prints you used and the binding is really pretty. I use vintage sheets for backings quite often and have not noticed a difference in puckering. I still get them sometimes no matter what material I use or how taught I tape it.
ReplyDeleteHeather that is so beautiful. I absolutely love the yellow backing. So perfectly perfect.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!! Have a beautiful Sunday! xo Heather
DeleteSuch a beautiful quilt!

So much crafting loveliness! A quilt, an afghan and some lovely vintage finds all since last I visited. You are so talented, my friend. Everything looks so lush!
ReplyDeleteHi Heather.....Oh...My goodness! I just love...love...love your beautiful new quilt. You have created a masterpiece and an heirloom. I love the wonderful colors and prints you have chosen.

What a beautiful quilt. Very pretty.
ReplyDeleteYour granny quilt turned out beautifully!! I have not ever tried to use a sheet for backing a quilt, but they are such a nice big size, it's a great idea. Just make sure the type of fabric fiber you use on the back matches what you used on the front of the quilt. If you pieced the front with cotton, make sure the vintage sheet is also 100 percent cotton. Same with the thread you use to quilt it with. Use cotton, not poly. If you used poly blend fabrics on the front, then it's safe to used poly blend sheet on the back and poly thread. But you probably already know this, and I'm just preachin' to the choir.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I actually did not know this, so thanks!! I love hearing all the tricks to the trade!! ;) Have a lovely Sunday! xo Heather
DeleteYour granny quilt is adorable, Heather! I love the look of the pretty vintage sheet backing, it works so well.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful weekend!

Heather that is going to be such a snugly blanket! It just oozes in sweetness! You do great with your colors. As far as the furniture, I know what it is, because my Dad made one of these when he was a boy and my mom and dad still have it in there house! It is a book seat. The books go underneath, and it is a stool for the sitting! The books line up as if on a shelf. Does that make sense? It is a very charming and pretty piece. My dad made his around 1950. I hope this is helpful!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Susie
Thank you Susie!! It is always great to put a name to a treasure! How wonderful that your dad built one, and I am sure it is beautiful and well loved! Thank you for sharing!! Have a blessed Sunday! xo Heather
DeleteOh Heather I am envious of your wonderful quilts. I am a crafter but not a person who likes to sew, yet, but I am hoping to learn to crochet soon in time for Christmas and holiday gifts. I used one of your freebie banners for my own blog. I hope you don't mind me saying that it is http://creatingandbaking.blogspot.co.uk. Thank you for inspiration.xx
ReplyDeleteHi Louise!! Thank you! I love crocheting, and learned last year. You will love it! Oh, I didn't create the pretty banners, but the wonderful Keren of Free Pretty Things For You might have. She created my blog design, and works with Shabby Blogs. I will take a sweet visit to you blog to see it! Have a lovely day! xo Heather
DeleteI am so impressed with your beautiful quilt Heather! Perfect for snuggling up with a mug of cocoa and a stack of magazines:)
ReplyDeleteYour granny quilt is super! I really love it!!
ReplyDeleteI do have a suggestion, now that I am seeing pictures of your pin basting. When I pin baste, I place my pins no wider apart than my fist. I put a ton of pins on my quilts to hold everything together. I personally do not mind mixing poly/cotton sheets with all cotton fabric and batting. As for thread, I use cotton usually, but I have been branching out and using rayon or a shiny polyester thread, too. The quilt police do not exist except in our minds. =)
Oh Heather I missed this and oh did I miss it! Absolutely gorgeous....Love what you did to the back. You are so talented. Love it..smiles..Renee
