a vintage shelf and projects

Fall is finally here, and I have been enjoying the cool, crisp air and wearing sweaters.
At an estate sale I found this neat vintage shelf, but wasn't quite sure what it was for. A lady standing next to me told it was a shelf that is meant for a book to be displayed on.
I love the detail in the wood, and how small it is. So sweet.
I am not sure what kind of book would have been placed on it, but I was thinking maybe a Bible or a book opened. What do you think?
Here it is on the wall and it slants a little. I just need to find the perfect book to go on it! I think it would be neat to find an old Bible, so we'll see. Have you ever seen one? What kind of book would you place on it?
Well, it is that time! Christmas projects! I am already starting on my Christmas line of vintagey tea towels that will be coming soon!! I also have a holiday boutique coming up in November, so I am busy again getting ready and sewing away.
A pretty vintage table runner that just needs a scalloped border, and will be heading to my shoppe soon!

I have also been working on ideas for some new goodies. Here is a little peak at some with sweet vintage feed sacks and fabrics.
The maple leaf quilt is partially pinned and ready for some hand stitching. Thank you for all your sweet comments and recommendations! ;)
And, lastly I am on my last color for the patchwork blanket. I have already been snuggling with the other half, while I crochet away in the evenings. These crocheted blankets really keep you warm. I love it! Well, I am off to create away. Are you working on any sweet projects? Hope you are enjoying some beautiful weather!

  1. So many great projects! I just love the Christmas fabric. You could use the little bookshelf in the kitchen to hold a cookbook!

  2. My guess for the little shelf...Perhaps it held sheet music. The lip on the bottom looks quite shallow for a regular book. xo

    1. It is pretty shallow, and small in the length. I have tried many old books, and when it is on the wall, they don't really fit. So we'll see what I can find out there for it! Happy weekend! xo Heather

  3. I think I might need to put an old children's story book on that little shelf! Lovely fabric! Ada :)

  18. I can see that shelf holding a very old and well used Bible, turned to the Christmas story with some holly and evergreens surrounding it! I've never seem a shelf like that, it's really cool.

Love all your projects. I was snuggling under the afghan I got for my wedding shower 32 years ago last night. I always think of my great aunt who made it when I do!

  19. Heather, you are always creating such sweet and lovely things. I bet that little shelf was definitely used for a Bible. There are similar free standing book holders here that are used for the Quran. But you could use it for any book to reflect the season or the holidays. Or you know what, maybe it was used for a guestbook at a B&B. That would be a fun idea. I have a friend who used to have everyone sign a guestbook everytime she'd have a get together. Fun memento of time spent with friends. Wishing you a wonderful day. Tammy

  22. Lovely post, Heather. The little shelf is a lovely thing...you could use it to display a vintage book filled with beautiful illustrations, and turn it to a different page to enjoy each day :) I love all your pretty makes! It certainly is the perfect time to be crocheting a blanket or sewing a quilt to snuggle under while you work!
    Have a wonderful weekend.

  34. Just happened upon your blog and saw the post about this shelf. This is actually a shelf from an old Kellogg wooden telephone. You can google it and see pictures of the old wooden phones with this shelf on the front.
